Todd Organic Orchards
Todd Organic Orchards is a family-owned pear and winegrape farm located in Potter Valley in Mendocino County, California. Dan Todd and wife, Alice, own the 93-acre farm, which is best known for producing the highest quality Bartlett and Red Bartlett pears, and more recently, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Pears in Mendocino County and bordering Lake County are commonly referred to as mountain pears and are considered some of the best quality pears in the world. Todd’s pears are grown in this region and are marketed under the Todd Ranch Pears label.
The Todd family is steep in farming tradition. Dan’s father, grandfather and great grandfather were all farmers in Southern California’s Orange County area, dating back to the 1800s. As their once orange and walnut groves and vegetable fields gave way to southland Freeways and sprawling post war development in the 1950s, the Todd family moved to Potter Valley to grow pears, prunes and walnuts. It was here where Dan Todd purchased a portion of the family’s land in 1977 and began his own dedication to growing pears. He transitioned to organic practices in 1986; began the certification process in 1987 and became certified organic with CCOF in 1989.
Today Dan and son, Andy, maintain 50 acres of Bartlett and Red Bartlett Pears in addition to 31 acres of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir winegrapes. They encourage native cover crops as a source of insect habitat for beneficials and organic matter for soil. Compost is used to feed and maintain the health of the soil.
Todd Organic Orchards has been a regular supplier of organic pears to Sutherland Produce since the early ‘90s.
